At the 2016 ASBA New Board Member Orientation, board members
spent the day learning about law, finance, communication, policy, legislative
advocacy, ethics, open meetings, student achievement, and creating working
relationships with their Superintendents. The orientation created a foundation
for board members to feel confident in their abilities as elected officials.
An important take away from the orientation is an effective
school board is one that focuses on these key areas: Vision, Accountability,
Policy and board operations, Community leadership, and Board/Superintendent Relationships.
Although the orientation served as a crash course of important information, ASBA
encourages board members to continue their professional development and
training and attend future conferences, workshops and trainings.
Despite all the policy and regulations directing the work of
school boards, one thing was clear; Arizona Board Members are here to serve the
students of their community.
